Some
of you may have noticed that throughout my site I've been using a
new type of text effect. It has this 3d look to it which when used
in the right situation can look pretty cool.
- This thing didn't take that long to make and looks pretty cool.
When applied in the right situation it can look amazing. The
tutorial below will just give you a basic feel of the 3d Transform
filter which comes with Photoshop 5.5.
|
|
The first thing we have to do
is create a 300 by 300 or so image. The size really doesn't matter
but until your comfortable with this effect I'd stick to all the
settings I mention. Use a fairly big font, the color doesn't
matter.
Rename this layer the text
layer by double clicking on the layer itself in the layer
palette.
|
 |
Apply
whatever text effects you would like. The effects you see here
were made quickly, using the layer effects.
|
|
Next
we need to go to Filter<Render<3d Transform. When you do
this you should receive a message identical to the one on the
left. Click okay, what you've done is, you've given permission
to render the layer so that it is no longer defined as a text
layer.
|
 |
You
should see a new window. On the left side of the window you'll
see a tool box identical to the one on the right. Click the tool
highlighted (or press N). It's called the sphere tool.
|
 |
Draw
a circle and make sure that the text is in the center of the
green circle. You can move the circle around by using the black
arrow on the very top left.
|
And draw it around, you'll
notice how your text rotates in the shaper of a circle! Press
okay once you've got the desired 3d look. |
Now
comes the really fun part. To make it 3d we have to press the
button shown on the left. Put your cursor in the circle.
|
|
A
nice, clean, quick effect. There's more we can do though. Get
rid of the grayish and weird stuff around your text.
|
- Radial Gradient. You should have two layers. the first layer
should be containing the text. The second layer you just
created. On the second layer use the elliptical marquee tool and
inside the marquee use the radial gradient tool.
It should look something like that. Okay don't be alarmed you
can't see your 3d text yet. Let's go to layer options, by right
clicking on the layer with the radial gradient. A menu similar
to the one on the right should come up. Click layer options and
go to "multiply. Tada, we should have something like the
thing on the bottom:

|
Let's
create a new layer. Double click on the layer and rename it
"gradient". Once done, press the button "D",
your foreground color should be black and Background color
should be white.

Not bad for Photoshop 5.5
eh? :)
